Privacy policy

Last updated 11 October 2026

The short version. Inside Geopolitics doesn’t use cookies, advertising or tracking pixels, and doesn’t sell or share your information. We count how the site is used in an anonymous way that can’t identify you. The only personal information we ask for is your email address, and only if you sign up for the newsletter.

Who we are

This policy covers insidegeopolitics.com, an independent publication. In it, “Inside Geopolitics”, “we” and “us” mean the publication, which is responsible for the information described here. For anything about your privacy, email brief@insidegeopolitics.com.

The newsletter

If you sign up, we keep your email address, the dates you signed up and confirmed, and your subscription status. MailPoet may also record the IP address used to sign up and confirm, as a record that you agreed. You’re only subscribed once you click the confirmation link we email you.

We use this only to send you the Inside Geopolitics newsletter. We manage the list with MailPoet, a newsletter tool that runs on our own WordPress site, and the emails are delivered through MailPoet’s sending service, operated by Automattic Inc., which handles your address only to deliver them.

Our emails use standard open and link-click measurement, so we can see which topics readers find useful. If you’d rather not be measured, you can block images in your email app.

Every email has an unsubscribe link. Once you unsubscribe you won’t get any more newsletters. We keep your address on the list marked as unsubscribed, so that you aren’t added back by mistake, unless you ask us to delete it.

To stop automated spam signups, the signup form briefly keeps a scrambled (hashed) form of your IP address, for one hour, to limit repeated attempts.

Visiting the site

No cookies or tracking. We don’t set cookies, and we don’t use third-party analytics, advertising or social-media pixels.

Anonymous usage counts. To see how many people are reading and which features they use, each open page checks in with our own server about once a minute, saying whether it’s on screen or in the background, which page it is, the kind of device (phone, tablet or desktop), the site that sent you here (just its name, such as “instagram”), and counts of what was used (for example, “opened a full story” or “opened a country profile”). Each open page gets a random number that exists only while it’s open and is never saved on your device. We keep totals per day, not records of individual visits, and we don’t record IP addresses with them. They’re kept for up to 400 days.

Page-view counter. The counter on the homepage adds one to a daily total each time a page loads. It records nothing about you.

Server logs. Like any website, our host (Bluehost) automatically logs each request, including your IP address, browser type and the page requested. These logs are used to keep the site running and secure, and are kept as set by the host.

Saved on your device. The site saves a few small notes in your own browser (its “local storage”) so it remembers your choices. They never leave your device, aren’t used to track you, and you can clear them at any time in your browser settings:

  • whether you’ve seen the welcome screen and the phone swipe guide
  • your phone layout choice, if you’ve set one
  • your newsletter status (signed up or unsubscribed), so we don’t keep asking
  • when the newsletter reminder was last shown, so it appears at most every two weeks

Services that load parts of the page

Our fonts are hosted on our own server. A few parts of the page load from outside services, which see your IP address when your browser requests them, as with any website:

  • cdnjs (Cloudflare) and jsDelivr: the code libraries and map outlines behind the globe
  • flagcdn.com: country flag images

Links to Instagram, TikTok and Buy Me a Coffee (our “Support us” page) take you to those services, whose own privacy policies apply. We receive no information from them when you visit.

Your rights

You can ask us to show you, correct or delete the information we hold about you, or to stop using it. Email brief@insidegeopolitics.com and we’ll respond within 30 days.

If you’re in the UK or EU: we send the newsletter because you consented, and you can withdraw that consent at any time by unsubscribing. We keep server logs and use the anti-spam check because we have a legitimate interest in keeping the site secure. Our host and email service are in the United States, so your information is processed there. You can complain to your local data protection authority.

If you’re in California: we don’t sell or share personal information, as those terms are defined in the California Consumer Privacy Act.

Children

The site isn’t aimed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.

Changes

If we change this policy, we’ll update it here and change the date at the top. If a change is significant, we’ll tell newsletter subscribers.
